Arbutus is a Great Neighborhood

Despite being so close to downtown Vancouver, Arbutus has managed to retain its neighborhood feel. It’s a peaceful place with nice views and beautiful trees and charming homes. A popular retirement neighborhood, Arbutus is also attracting its share of young professionals. Whenever you need a plumber we are here for those times.

Situated between King Edward, to the south, and West 16th Avenue to the north, Arbutus is a true heritage area. The original Ridge area featured large lots and tree-lined streets with elegant homes that had spectacular views of the North Shore Mountains and downtown Vancouver. Its northern section was originally a low-lying marsh which was filled in with sand from False Creek in the 1940s.

Arbutus Ridge is an affluent residential neighborhood in Vancouver's West Side. It is bordered by 16th Avenue in the north, 41st Avenue in the south, Mackenzie Street in the west, and East Boulevard in the east.

Our seaside community for active adults, comprised of over 640 homes for adults 50 + years young, is situated on 148 acres of waterfront landscapes, protected forests and an 18 hole golf course. The community is connected by a network of oceanfront walking trails, gardens and green space, with a common-use village center. The views of Salt Spring Island, Satellite Inlet and Mount Baker are beautiful.

Within 10 to 60 minutes, you’ll find all the major amenities you’ll ever need – hospitals, airports, ferry and bus terminals, marinas, shopping, restaurants, banks, universities and cultural events. Noted to be one of Canada’s first gated adult communities, Arbutus Ridge was modelled after the wildly successful Del Webb Community in Sun City, Arizona, that defined the dream retirement concept in the U.S.

Varied Housing

Primarily consisting of single-family, detached homes, Arbutus has a smattering of townhouses and low-rise and high-rise dwellings. Newer developments, for the most part, have been built to reflect the heritage style of the area.

The main impetus for the growth of this area was the spillover need for housing from the Dunbar area, as well as the 1905 construction of the street car line from Vancouver to Steveston that was run by BC Electric Company. The line opened up access to the area and the neighborhood grew from there. The majority of the homes in the area were built between 1946 and 1960.

Shopping and Restaurants

Although there is little in the way of shopping and restaurants right in the Arbutus neighborhood, it is surrounded by them and the excellent transit in the area makes getting anywhere a piece of cake.

Recreation

There are a number of green areas in Arbutus, with Trafalgar Park being the largest and offering soccer and baseball facilities as well as being a popular location for Ultimate Frisbee. Dog-friendly off-leash areas, walking paths and jogging paths are plentiful.

The Arbutus club is an amazing recreational facility for the young and old alike. It offers a wide range of athletic, recreational, social and cultural activities for members. Located in the middle of Arbutus, it is on a seven- acre site and has been there since 1964.
