Recent Changes in Dunbar
In the past, Dunbar’s predominantly upper-middle-class residents consisted largely of retirees. That has been changing recently as the area has become home to many newcomers. This, along with the overall population increase for Vancouver in general, has led to the construction of condominiums along the main streets. These buildings almost all feature street-level retail and commercial businesses that are adding to the area’s attractiveness as a shopping destination. Dunbar History
In the early 1900s, this part of Vancouver was still heavily forested and used for logging. Early settlers had to clear away lots of logging debris before they could build or plant anything.
It wasn’t until the 1920s that Dunbar became a defined community, a result of the construction of streetcar routes connecting downtown Vancouver with areas along the Fraser River. Early building codes required homes to be set back well from streets, making the first homes in the area are easily spotted today. Today Dunbar boasts many designated historical homes, one fine example being Haigler House, at 3537 West 30th Avenues.
