What's in South Granville

As one of the best neighborhoods in Vancouver to visit, the South Granville retail community attracts a wide range of clientele, from aspiring designers and art lovers to fashion trend setters and gourmet connoisseurs. With something for all styles and tastes, visitors can indulge in beautiful fashion and design, the best of home decor, delicious food and drink, relaxing beauty treatments, and entertaining live theatre!

South Granville is a tastemaker’s paradise. Located in one of Vancouver’s most affluent neighborhoods, this swanky yet welcoming shopping district runs from the Granville Bridge to 16th Avenue, and is nestled between Shaughnessy to the south, Kitsilano to the west, and Granville Island and downtown Vancouver to the north. The area was first developed by the Canadian Pacific Railway as an elite neighborhood back in 1907, and has been a busy shopping district ever since.

Just off of Granville Street, you can still catch glimpses of grand estates, like Hycroft, past tall hedges and long driveways. It only takes about 15 minutes to walk from end to end, but expect to spend at least a few hours browsing through stylish fashion and home boutiques, luxe salons and spas, high-end art galleries (yes, they are open to the public!), and breaks for an incredible meal or treats along the way.

South Granville History

Established in 1907, South Granville (or less commonly "Uptown") is an upscale Business Improvement Area (BIA) and neighborhood south of Vancouver's downtown core, centred along Granville Street and bordered by the neighborhoods of Kitsilano, Fairview and Shaughnessy.

Separated from Downtown by False Creek, the area runs along Granville Street from the south side of the Granville Street Bridge up to 16th Ave, where storefronts are replaced by the residences and hedges of Shaughnessy.

1907 has been decided as the unofficial birth year of the neighborhood. In that year Richard Marpole drew up plans for Shaughnessy Heights, the Canadian Pacific Railway's newest subdivision south of 16th Ave, pitched as an alternative to the then-upscale West End ("Blueblood Alley"). This is now known as "First Shaughnessy", or simply Shaughnessy. That same year, what was once Centre Street was given its present name, Granville Street, as the portion north of the bridge already bore that name. In 2007, the South Granville BIA commemorated the neighborhood's centennial by encasing a state-of-the-art, stainless steel time capsule in concrete and stone under the entrance of the historic Stanley Theatre.

As well as being a fast-growing neighborhood of residences, shops and restaurants, South Granville is home to a vibrant arts and culture scene. The neighborhood contains a strip, between Broadway and the foot of the Granville Bridge, known as "Gallery Row" which is home to a number of art galleries: Bau-Xi Gallery, Douglas Reynolds Gallery. Further south, the neighborhood is home to the historic Stanley Theatre, built in 1931. Once a popular cinema in its early days, the Stanley Theatre is now the stage of the Arts Club Theatre Company and the Industrial Alliance Stage.

South Granville is represented in the House of Commons of Canada by Jody Wilson-Raybould, the member for Vancouver-Granville. The neighborhood is represented in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia as part of the riding of Vancouver-Fairview, the current MLA being George Heyman.
